Comprised of rappers Smoove Da General (20), Yung (22), JayAre (22), and resident dancer M-Bone (22), Cali Swag District are a practical four-man performance machine hailing from the streets of Inglewood, CA.
The Inglewood rappers are set to release their debut album The Kickback on Sphinx Music Entertainment/319 Music Group distributed by Sony RED on July 12th. “Burn Out (Drive Fast),”’ will be the next official single off the album and a music video will follow soon after. Nominated for Best Group at the 2011 BET Music Awards, Cali Swag District exploded onto the music scene in 2010 with the platinum selling first single “Teach Me How To Dougie.” The song catapulted a Dougie dance sensation that has swept the nation captivating American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest and Jennifer Lopez while the first lady Michelle Obama did her own version during her “Let’s Move!” initiative. Cali Swag District turned the song and dance into a pop culture phenomenon with everyone including Ellen DeGeneres, Justin Bieber, CNN 'Situation Room' host Wolf Blitzer, Wendy Williams, the cast on Glee, Oliver Stone, Mo’Nique, Chris Brown and Kim Kardashian getting their Dougie on. Altogether the Dougie movement has taken over YouTube with over 100 million video streams. Even more widespread is the sports worlds' celebration of the Dougie movement. NBA Washington Wizard's rookie sensation John Wall did the Dougie during the starting line last season that has received almost 2 million YouTube streams. In addition to Wall, athletes from Cleveland Cavaliers, NY Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors and Portland Trailblazers all have been seen doing the Dougie celebration. College teams are also embracing the dance as seen by the Oregon State Duck mascot doing the Dougie on a nationally televised game this season. All in all, The Wall Street Journal has declared 2010 "the year of the Dougie." Cali Swag District has captured the nation with the Dougie which was introduced to them by a high school friend that attended Texas Southern. Knowing the dance originated in Dallas, TX the guys wanted to add their Cali Swag to the dance movement. “In the end, we loved what they where doing in Texas so much that we wanted to bring it to Cali,” explains Yung. "Going 2x platinum with the ‘Dougie’ is of course the highlight of our career thus far and we appreciate all the love from our fans. We're excited to keep the Cali Swag party going with our new single "Burn Out," states Smoove. CSD is most proud of its high-energy stage shows—the latter part of 2010 was spent with a string of performances at School Tours around Southern California. The group has already headlined a US tour and toured Canada with Nelly in Spring 2011. Part of CSD’s charm and fire is that the guys are energetic, fun, zany and truly know how to entertain their fans. “We perform like we’re members of the audience and how we want to see a show,” says Smoove. Playing constantly to audiences of screaming girls, their popular song hooks and ‘commands to party’ are only heightened by M-Bone’s ability to get the crowd hyped with his dancing. The guys are long-time friends that all attended Inglewood’s Morningside High School. “With Cali Swag, we get fly with everything we do,” says Smoove who is the general of the group. He is influenced a lot by West Coast hip-hop artists like Snoop Dogg and E40. “I’m funny and pretty happy all the time. I just like to be me.” Yung is just a fan of good music. “I play too much, but I want the crown, Tyrese has! I’m about to put him out of business. I’m like sexy chocolate, I’ve been lifting weights and as soon as I take off my shirt, I’m taking everybody out,” he says half-jokingly. JayAre is the cool laid-back one, but don’t get it twisted, he says, “I get the job done when playing my part in the District.” An artist who likes to paint and draw, JayAre is influenced by Jay-Z, Drake and Lil Wayne. M-Bone a big fan of acts like Michael Jackson, New Edition and Kris Kross, considers himself to be the wild one of the group. “If it ain’t fun, then it ain’t me! I bring the fun, the energy and the hype – something I believe that’s missing in entertainment today. I’m about to bring something new; something they’ve never seen before.” Cali Swag District’s debut album will be released through Sphinx Music Entertainment/319 Music Group. |
